Travelling through Abruzzo, I can’t help bringing you to L’Aquila, my hometown (see the webcams). I don’t experience it as a tourist, but you can discover it with fresh eyes. Often underestimated or simply unknown, L’Aquila is close, rich in history, culture, and nature. A visit here is never wasted time.
The 16th‑century castle and its surrounding park are among the city’s most iconic landmarks, perfect for walks, views, and a first encounter with local history.
Ancient palaces, elegant squares, and the legendary “99 churches, 99 squares, 99 fountains” shape the heart of the city.
The Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, where Pope Celestine V rests, is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Nearby squares like Piazza Regina Margherita tell centuries of civic life.
Every 28 August, the Holy Door of Collemaggio opens for just one day, granting plenary indulgence to those who cross it. A historic procession carries the Papal Bull from the Town Hall to the basilica, accompanied by events and celebrations.
In winter, the Epiphany Fair on 5 January fills the streets with stalls, colours, and a festive atmosphere.
Some buildings still bear the marks of the 2009 earthquake. The city has changed, but its magic and identity remain intact.
Campo Felice, Rocca di Cambio and the surrounding highlands offer stunning landscapes in every season: hiking in summer, snow and winter sports in the colder months.
