What to see in Guardiagrele

A Gothic collegiate church, 15th-century frescoes and a great goldsmith tradition.

Collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore

The symbol of the town: a 14th-century Gothic portal with a lunette of the Coronation of the Virgin, attributed to the school of Nicola da Guardiagrele, and a 13th-century bell tower. The interior was rebuilt in the 18th century after an earthquake.

Saint Christopher fresco

Under the side portico of the church, the large Saint Christopher painted by Andrea Delitio in 1473.

Cathedral Museum

Opened in 1987 in the medieval hall of the collegiate church, it displays sacred art from the 14th to the early 20th century: vestments, reliquaries, goldsmith work and what remains of Nicola da Guardiagrele’s processional cross of about 1431.

Church of San Francesco

A 14th-century church where the remains of Saint Nicholas the Greek were moved in 1338. Next to it, in Piazza San Francesco, is the 17th-century cloister of the town hall.

Historic palaces

Palazzo Marini (1391), Palazzo De Lucia (16th century) and Palazzo Elisii (15th–18th century) show the town’s wealth between the Middle Ages and the modern age.

Civic museums

The Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Costume and Tradition, devoted to daily life and traditional dress.

Tip: the church, the Saint Christopher and the Cathedral Museum are in the same building: start here and continue towards Piazza San Francesco.

Origins and identity

History of Guardiagrele

From Italic necropolises to the town of goldsmiths.

The area was inhabited in prehistoric and Italic times: a pre-Roman necropolis was found near Comino. Guardiagrele lay on the border between the Marrucini and the Frentani, which made it a market town.

It appears in the 12th century as Greellem. By the 13th century it was already known for its goldsmiths, and in the 14th century it had its own mint.

Between the 14th and 15th centuries Nicola da Guardiagrele, the greatest Abruzzo goldsmith, lived and worked here; among his works is the silver altar frontal in Teramo Cathedral.

Today Guardiagrele is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, a member of Cittaslow and part of the Majella National Park, which has an office here at Via Occidentale 6.

Did you know? in The Triumph of Death, Gabriele d’Annunzio described Guardiagrele as a “city of stone”.
