La Camosciara – trekking in the Abruzzo National Park

Camosciara Guide

Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park

The Camosciara is one of the most spectacular areas of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park: a vast amphitheatre of pale rock, home to the Apennine chamois and a symbol of the protected nature of the central Apennines.

1. Why it is called “Camosciara”

The name “Camosciara” comes from the long-standing presence of the Apennine chamois, one of the park’s most emblematic species. Once a hunting reserve, the area is now a Strict Nature Reserve, where habitats and wildlife are protected with the highest level of conservation.

2. Where it is located

Camosciara lies in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, between Civitella Alfedena, Villetta Barrea and Opi, in the province of L’Aquila.

The main access point is the Camosciara Visitor Area, reached by car along the road connecting Civitella Alfedena to the SS83 “Marsicana”.

3. Access and regulations

  • Motor vehicles: the inner area is closed to private cars; access is on foot or via authorised services.
  • Starting point: the walk begins at the Camosciara Visitor Area, where parking and visitor facilities are available.
  • Initial route: a paved pedestrian road of about 3 km leads to the café/refreshment area.
  • Tourist train: available in summer, connecting the visitor area to the inner zone (ticket required).
  • Pets: dogs are allowed only on a leash and in accordance with park regulations.

4. Main trails

Trail G5 – Ninfe and Tre Cannelle Waterfalls

  • Length: about 7 km round trip.
  • Elevation gain: around 150 m.
  • Difficulty: easy, suitable for families with basic walking experience.
  • Terrain: initial paved road + dirt path in the final section leading to the waterfalls.
  • Points of interest: Ninfe Waterfall and Tre Cannelle Waterfall.

From the visitor area, follow the pedestrian road to the café/refreshment point. From there, a pedestrian-only trail climbs into the forest, first reaching the Ninfe Waterfall and then, with a short detour, the Tre Cannelle Waterfall.

Other routes for experienced hikers

  • Camosciara Loop: a longer, more panoramic route with views over the entire rocky amphitheatre.
  • Monte Sterpi d’Alto: a demanding ascent, suitable only for well-equipped expert hikers.
  • Connections to Val di Rose and Civitella Alfedena: full-day treks requiring proper maps and planning.

5. Waterfalls

Ninfe Waterfall

The most famous waterfall in Camosciara: a beautiful cascade set among pale rocks, mosses and lush vegetation, easily reached via Trail G5.

Tre Cannelle Waterfall

A short detour beyond the Ninfe Waterfall leads to the Tre Cannelle Waterfall, known for its multiple streams flowing between the rocks — a perfect spot for photos and a break.

6. Wildlife and flora

Camosciara is one of the most biodiverse areas in the entire park. With a bit of luck — and always keeping a safe distance — you may encounter:

  • Apennine chamois: the park’s symbolic species, closely linked to steep rocky slopes.
  • Marsican brown bear: rare and precious; it is essential not to disturb it and always maintain distance.
  • Apennine wolf: elusive and rarely seen, but present in the area.
  • Deer, roe deer and birds of prey: including buzzards, golden eagles and other high-altitude species.

The vegetation is dominated by beech forests, maples, yews and a rich understory with wild orchids and other species typical of cool, humid Apennine environments.

7. Scenic viewpoints

  • Main road: offers wide views of the Camosciara rocky amphitheatre right from the start.
  • Café/refreshment area: excellent vantage point over the dolomitic cliffs, ideal for a break.
  • Trail to the waterfalls: numerous viewpoints over forests, streams and cascades.

8. Available services

  • Tourist train: seasonal service from the visitor area to the inner zone.
  • E-bike rental: for exploring the surroundings along permitted routes.
  • Guided tours: excursions with authorised guides focusing on wildlife, flora and geology.
  • Picnic area: designated spaces for breaks and packed lunches in permitted zones.
  • Café and refreshments: drinks, snacks and basic services.
  • Info point: information on trails, rules and available activities.

9. Best time to visit

  • Spring: waterfalls at their fullest, blooming flowers and mild temperatures.
  • Summer: all services available, but higher visitor numbers; starting early is recommended.
  • Autumn: spectacular foliage in the beech forests and a peaceful atmosphere.
  • Winter: possible snow, very scenic; with proper conditions, trails can be explored with snowshoes.

10. Suggested itinerary (2–3 hours)

  1. Start: arrive at the Camosciara Visitor Area and get ready for the walk.
  2. Pedestrian road: follow the paved road to the café/refreshment area (about 30–40 minutes).
  3. Ninfe Waterfall: climb the forest trail to reach the waterfall.
  4. Tre Cannelle Waterfall: take the short detour to the second waterfall.
  5. Return: follow the same route back to the visitor area.
