Trekking Guide in the Sirente–Velino Park

🥾 3‑Day Trek: Standard Version

Day 1 — Rovere to Rocca di Mezzo

  • Technical Data 12–15 km | +700 m / –500 m Difficulty: intermediate
  • Full Route • Start: village of Rovere (1420 m).
    • Ascent: towards Rifugio del Sirente through beech woods and clearings.
    • Optional detour: panoramic viewpoint over Valle Lupara.
    • Finish: gentle descent to Rocca di Mezzo.
  • Why it’s great A perfect introduction to the park’s landscape without starting too hard. Wide views over the plateau and the Sirente ridge.

Day 2 — Ascent to Monte Sirente

  • Technical Data 14–16 km | +1100 m / –1100 m Difficulty: demanding
  • Full Route • Start: from Rocca di Mezzo or Secinaro.
    • Ascent: up the Valle dell’Aquila to the ridge.
    • Traverse: panoramic ridge walk to the summit (2348 m).
    • Return: same route or variant via Valle Lupara.
  • Why it’s great One of the most spectacular peaks in the Apennines. Views from Gran Sasso to Velino and all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

Day 3 — Campo Felice / Monte Rotondo

  • Technical Data 10–13 km | +600 m / –600 m Difficulty: intermediate
  • Full Route • Start: from Rocca di Mezzo towards Campo Felice.
    • Ascent: to Monte Rotondo (2062 m).
    • Descent: loop back across the plateau.
  • Why it’s great A beautiful contrast between open grasslands and rocky ridges, with close‑up views of the Velino massif.

🌿 3‑Day Trek: Easy Version

Day 1 — Rocca di Mezzo Loop

  • Technical Data 8–10 km | +200 m / –200 m Difficulty: easy
  • Details Simple trail towards Rovere across the plateau. Loop return.

🧒 3‑Day Trek: Family & Kids Version

Day 1 — Altopiano delle Rocche

4–6 km | Minimal elevation gain | Very easy

Route

Flat trail towards Rovere through meadows and small woods. Loop return.

For kids

Easy terrain, grazing animals, perfect picnic spots.

Day 2 — Exploring Piani di Pezza

3–5 km | +80 m | Easy

Route

Short walk to the Vall’Orsa forest. Return on the same path.

For kids

Huge meadows, “fairy‑tale” woods, animal tracks.

Day 3 — Mini‑Adventure in Vall’Orsa

4–6 km | +120 m | Easy

Route

Small loop among beech trees and clearings. Ideal for a picnic.

For kids

Enchanting forest that sparks imagination and curiosity.

📌 Useful Tips & Logistics

Season & Water

Best period: June–October. Water sources are scarce: always carry plenty (min 2L).

Safety & Wildlife

Area rich in deer, wolves and eagles. Stay on marked trails and use CAI maps or offline GPS.

Where to Stay

Rocca di Mezzo, Ovindoli, Rovere and Rocca di Cambio offer the best accommodation options.

Many of the routes described can be enjoyed in different ways depending on the season

🧗 Mountaineering & Ski Mountaineering

  • The Great Walls Monte Sirente and the Corno Grande (on the Gran Sasso, easily reached from the Sirente–Velino area) offer both classic and modern alpine routes. The north face of Sirente is a thrilling challenge for experienced climbers.
  • In Winter The icy gullies of Velino and Sirente become ideal terrain for winter mountaineering and ski‑mountaineering (only for experts with ARTVA, probe and shovel).

🐎 Horseback Riding

  • The Park’s Horse Trail The wide spaces of the Altopiano delle Rocche and the Piani di Pezza make these areas a paradise for equestrian tourism. The flat trails already described are ideal for trotting and cantering.
  • A Unique Experience Many local stables offer guided excursions to the Rifugio del Sirente, following the same route as Day 1 of the standard trek.

Note: The trails around Rocca di Mezzo and Campo Felice are shared routes. Whether you are hiking, snowshoeing or riding a horse, always respect other users and the local wildlife.
