What Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is
The region’s most widespread white wine.
Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC is a white wine made from Trebbiano abruzzese and Trebbiano toscano grapes. It is straw yellow, with delicate aromas of white flowers and fruit, and a fresh, savoury taste.
Most of it is a white to drink young. Some historic producers, however, make long-aged versions that rank among Italy’s most admired whites.
Territory
Where it comes from
It is grown on the hills of the whole region, above all in the provinces of Chieti and Pescara, where vineyards reach almost to the sea. The Adriatic breeze and cool nights give the wine its freshness.
From field to table
How it is made
- The grapes are harvested in September, with the right balance of sugar and acidity.
- They are pressed gently and the must is separated from the skins at once.
- The must ferments at a controlled temperature, to keep the aromas.
- The wine matures in steel or, for the finest versions, in wooden or concrete vats.
In the kitchen
How to use it
It is the wine of Abruzzo’s fish and seafood cooking.
- With brodetto and Adriatic fish
- With scapece and fried fish
- With vegetables, pulses and mushroom dishes
- Served chilled, at 10–12 °C
Tips
How to choose and store it
- Young Trebbiano should be drunk within a couple of years; aged versions can wait.
- On the label look for «Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC».
- Store bottles in a dark, cool place.
- Do not serve it too cold, or it loses its aromas.
Famous wineries: among the most celebrated names of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo are Valentini in Loreto Aprutino and Emidio Pepe in Torano Nuovo, whose whites age for decades.

Trebbiano has been grown in Abruzzo for centuries and for a long time was the white wine of farming families, drunk young through the year.
The Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC was created in 1972. Today other native whites, such as Pecorino and Passerina, are grown alongside it, but Trebbiano remains the region’s most widespread white.
