Casamaina, a hamlet of Lucoli just steps from the Campo Felice ski resort

Travelling through Abruzzo, today we are heading to Campo Felice. This time we’re coming from the Lucoli side and… we came across Casamaina. It is the last inhabited village before venturing into the mountains of L’Aquila toward Campo Felice. We pass through here every time we go skiing, usually without stopping to look at the village. Yet I truly believe it deserves attention. Until a few years ago, it was just another small mountain village, even a bit shabby, I would say. But in recent years it has undergone an incredible transformation. Most of the houses have been renovated and repainted in bright colours. The whole village is clean and quite tidy. And indeed, there are many more people around now.
Of course, the “real” residents are still few, but a certain kind of tourism is developing — people who have a second home in the mountains and are beginning to appreciate how wonderful it is to spend free time in a place in the middle of nowhere! Starting from L’Aquila, you take the road to Lucoli and continue climbing through the mountains for about thirty kilometres. Needless to say, the road is beautiful and wonderfully scenic. When you arrive in the village, you are surprised by the lively atmosphere, the people strolling around, the bright colours of the newer houses and the pleasant architecture of the older ones. And there is plenty to do here.
Just a few minutes by car you reach the Campo Felice ski lifts. There is a wide plain for cross‑country skiing, beautiful snowy woods for snowshoeing, and if you love speed, you can rent a snowmobile. In summer, the area is perfect for trekking, forests and high‑mountain meadows. There is also an ice rink in the village — the only one, at least in the province of L’Aquila — offering the chance to skate and enjoy a different kind of afternoon. And of course, you can end the day with a hot chocolate or a dinner featuring traditional Abruzzese cuisine. In Casamaina you can also stay quite close to the Campo Felice lifts, making it easy to spend a few days skiing in this well‑known Abruzzo resort.
